저번달 말에 열렸던 하드리쿼 쳐돌이들의 축제와도 같았던 2023 서울바앤스피릿쇼!

드가즈아아아어어엌 애주가들 폼 미츠따이;;

위스키의 인기가 좀처럼 식지 않음을 비단 시장 가격의 상승 뿐만 아니라 이처럼 많은 사람들이 참관하는 행사를 통해서도

느낄 수 있었다.

사진은 토요일 사진인데 사람 즈엉말 많았음.

(내년은 더 많아지는거 아닌가 걱정.)

고든앤맥페일 부스

행사장 입구쪽에 위치했기도 하고, 요즘 공격적으로 제품 출시와 마케팅을 하는듯 독립병입자 치고는 근래들어 꽤 자주 보

이고 있는 고든앤맥페일의 부스의 인기가 엄청 많았다.

웨이팅이 상당히 길었....

(깔끔하게 꾸민 부스와 직원분들의 친절한 설명이 인기몰이에 한몫 한듯 싶다.)

물론 라운지 입장 및 이용을 위해선 따로 판매하는 바우처를 구매해야 했다.

일반 위스키 Bar에서 파는 금액보다 상대적으로 저렴했기 때문에, 아주 개꿀이였다.

가벼운 음료나 과자 등도 무제한 이용 가능해서 귯귯!

29,30일 이틀 동안 라운지를 포함해서 정말 거의 모든 부스를 돌며 시음을 하고,

몸과 마음을 따뜻~~하게 적셨던 좋은 기억이 아직도 새록새록ㅎㅎ

(내년에도 또가야지!!)

더 할 말이 많지만, 아쉬운점들은 내년에 참관하면서 달래기로 하고,

이제 그 날 마셨던 수많은 종류의 술들 중에서 가장 기억에 남았고, 보틀로 구입까지하게 만들었던 위스키에 대한 이야기

를 살짝 해보려고 한다.

이틀간 그 많은 술들을 시음해보고 가장 맛도리로 느꼈지만 낯선 독립병입자이고 기타 정보가 많이 없어서 고민고민하다,

시음 두 세번에 걸쳐 해보고 정말 괜찮다 싶어서 보틀로 구매하게된,

The Firkin 49 Distilled at dailuaine

펄킨 위스키에 대해 간단히 썰 좀 풀고 시작하자면,

우선 펄킨 위스키의 마스터는,

위스키를 마시는 자들이라면 누구나 한번쯤은 접해봤을 조니워커 그린과 블루의 아버지이자, 디아지오의 매년 출시중인 6

개의 디스틸러스 에디션 시리즈를 최초 완성시킨 위스키 레전설, 마이크 콜링스 어르신이다.

마이크 콜링스 어르신이 디아지오를 떠나 자신만의 독립병입자를 만든 곳이 바로 이 펄킨이다.

(라고 정보가 너무 없어서 인터넷이랑 펄킨 홈페이지 들어가서 찾아봤다.)

아 그리고 여담이지만,

firkin은 위스키를 담는 가장 작은통을 의미 하기도 한다.

(약40리터짜리 오크통. 작고귀여워소중해~~~)

이번 행사때 구매한것은 그 펄킨의 위스키 중 두가지 셰리 캐스크 조합(Oloroso&Amontillado)으로 완성 시킨 펄킨49.

49의 숫자의 의미는 마이크 콜링스 어르신이1949년생이고, 태어나신 해를 기념하기 위한 것이라고 한다.

펄킨 49은 현재 두 증류소 병입 제품으로 출시 중인듯 하다.

하나는 툴리바딘, 그리고 다른 하나는 내가 보틀로 구매한 달유안.

땅콩이 박힌 스카치캔디랄까....

맛과 향에 대한 경험에 대해 이야기 해보자면,

우선 잔에 한잔 채우면,

향에서 이게 애초에 나에겐 생소했던 아몬틸라도 캐스크의 영향인지 굉~장히 너티하고 정말 유치원때 사탕목걸이로 만들

기도 하고, 너무 열심히 빨아묵어서 혓바닥 베이기도 했던 그 스카치 캔디의 껍질을 까서 킁킁 냄새 맡을때와 같은 느낌의

향이 코를 가득 채운다.

굉장히 개성있고 독특하다고 느껴짐.

49도에 가까운 도수 이지만 알콜이 크게 튀지도 않는다.

다만 아몬틸라도 캐스크의 영향탓인지 향긋하고 꾸덕한 개인적으로 환장하는 그 올로로소의 캐릭터는 잘 표현되지 않는듯

하다.

그러나 은은히 퍼지는 몰트향과 그 특유의 너티한 조합은 기분좋게 다가옴.
맛에서도 역시 향을 쫓아 진한 몰트와 견과류의 맛이 끝까지 유지가 되고,

48.9%도가 주는 적당한 무게감과 셰리캐스크가 주는 스파이시함으로 꽤 복합적인 맛을 표현한다.

피니쉬는 역시 땅콩이 박힌 스카치캔디 느낌으로다가 달달하며 고소한 향으로 적당히 코끝에 남아있다.

여타 고숙성 셰리 위스키들 처럼 복합적이면서 무게감이 더해진 깊이가 있는 부드러움은 아니지만, 직관적인 버터스카치

와 고소함의 개성이 잘 표현된 맛도리 위스키라 할 수 있겠다.

구매 가격도(행사가격이라 더 저렴했겠지만) 십만원 중후반대에 구매해서 그 가격에 이정도 라면 다음에 또 사마셔볼 법

한 정도.

(근데 데일리샷에 올라온 가격들은 글쎄......)

여튼 이번 서울바앤스피릿쇼를 통해서 맛있는 위스키를 알게되서 좋았고,

끝으로 이번 2023 서울바앤스피릿쇼에서 이 부스 저부스 다~돌아다니면서 느낀 올해의 최고의 부스는 단연 메타베브코

리아에서 진행한 럼&진 부스였다고 생각한다.

2023 Seoul Bar & Spirit Show (COEX Hall D, Seoul)

The 2023 Seoul Bar & Spirit Show, held at the end of last month, was basically a festival for hard-liquor-obsessed nutjobs like me!

Let's gooooooooo!! The drinkers were out in full force, absolutely unreal;;

You could feel that the whisky craze isn't cooling down anytime soon, not just from market prices going up, but also from events like this that draw such huge crowds.

These photos are from Saturday, and there were sooo many people.

(I'm worried there'll be even more next year.)

Gordon & MacPhail booth

Partly because it was right by the entrance, and partly because they seem to be pushing new releases and marketing pretty aggressively lately (you see them surprisingly often these days for an independent bottler), the Gordon & MacPhail booth was hugely popular.

The wait was pretty long....

(The neatly decorated booth and the staff's friendly explanations probably helped draw the crowds too.)

I'm broke so I couldn't buy and drink much ㅠㅠ (I'll become a successful person and come back next year with a hundred vouchers....)

Of course, to get into and use the lounge you had to buy vouchers that were sold separately.

It was relatively cheaper than what you'd pay at a regular whisky bar, so it was an absolute steal.

Light drinks and snacks were unlimited too, so thumbs up!

Over the two days, the 29th and 30th, I went around to pretty much every booth including the lounge, tasting away,

and the happy memory of warming up body and soul~~ is still fresh in my mind hehe

(Definitely going again next year!!)

There's a lot more I could say, but I'll save my gripes for next year's visit.

For now, I want to talk a little about the whisky that stuck with me the most out of the countless drinks I had that day, the one that actually made me buy a bottle.

After tasting all those drinks over two days, this one felt like the tastiest, but it's an unfamiliar independent bottler with not much info out there, so I agonised over it for a while.

I tasted it two or three times, decided it was genuinely good, and ended up buying a bottle:

Let me spill a bit of background on Firkin Whisky before getting started.

First off, the master behind Firkin Whisky is

none other than Mike Collings, whisky legend and the father of Johnnie Walker Green and Blue (which anyone who drinks whisky has probably come across at least once), and the man who first created Diageo's Distillers Edition series, six of which are released every year.

Firkin is the independent bottler that the great Mike Collings founded after leaving Diageo.

(...or so I found out after digging around online and on the Firkin website, because there's so little info out there.)

Oh, and as a side note,

a firkin also refers to the smallest cask used for holding whisky.

(An oak cask of about 40 litres. So tiny and cute and precious~~~)

What I bought at this event is Firkin 49, one of Firkin's whiskies, finished with a combination of two sherry casks (Oloroso & Amontillado).

Apparently the number 49 comes from Mike Collings being born in 1949, and it's meant to commemorate his birth year.

It looks like Firkin 49 is currently released as bottlings from two distilleries.

One is Tullibardine, and the other is Dailuaine, the one I bought a bottle of.

(But the website only has a description of the Tullibardine version. Hmm, how odd.)
Kind of like a butterscotch candy studded with peanuts....

Now let me talk about my experience of the taste and aroma.

First, when you pour a glass,

on the nose, maybe because of the Amontillado cask, which was new to me, it's incredibly nutty, and the aroma fills your nose just like when you unwrapped one of those butterscotch candies (the ones I used to make candy necklaces out of in kindergarten, and sucked on so hard I cut my tongue) and took a big sniff.

It feels really distinctive and unique.

It's close to 49% ABV, but the alcohol doesn't really jump out.

That said, maybe because of the Amontillado cask, that fragrant, thick and rich Oloroso character that I personally go crazy for doesn't come through much.

But the gently spreading malty aroma combined with that signature nuttiness is really pleasant.
On the palate, following the nose, the rich malt and nutty flavours hold all the way through,

and the decent weight from the 48.9% ABV plus the spiciness from the sherry casks give it a pretty complex flavour.

The finish, as expected, is like a peanut-studded butterscotch candy, sweet and nutty, lingering nicely at the tip of your nose.

It doesn't have the complex, weighty, deep smoothness of other long-aged sherried whiskies, but I'd call it a tasty whisky that really nails a straightforward butterscotch-and-nutty character.

As for the price, I bought it for somewhere in the mid-to-high 100,000 won range (probably cheaper because of the event pricing), and for that price, it's good enough that I'd buy it again sometime.

(But the prices listed on Dailyshot... well, I dunno......)

Anyway, I'm glad I discovered a delicious whisky through this Seoul Bar & Spirit Show,

and finally, after roaming around every single booth at the 2023 Seoul Bar & Spirit Show, the best booth of the year was hands down the Rum & Gin booth run by Metabev Korea.

(Huh? Out of nowhere?)

Because the part-timer working there was super pretty.
