면세전용인 애버펠디 16년 마데이라 캐스크가 그렇게 또 맛도리라는 소리는 들었었는데 막상 면세찬스 생기면 또 잘 안찾

게 되는 증류소 제품이라 도통 연이 닿지 않았었다.

일반 리쿼샵이나 바틀샵에서 파는 16년은 버번+셰리캐스크피니쉬 제품이라 면세의 그 친구랑은 다르기도 하고, 도수도

내겐 너무 아쉬운 40%라 고민을 한참 하던때에,

'응? 이래도 안사먹어!?이래도!?' 라는듯 편의점 CU픽업에서 13만원에 내앞에서 유혹의 댄스를????추는 바람에,
‘그래..맞아...요즘 발베니 더블우드 12년도 그 가격하는 엉망진창 세상인데 16년 숙성이 그 가격이면?

그래!이건 혜자다! 그래! 나는 현명하고 똑똑한 소비자이고!! 이것은 기회얏!!!현명한 소비자는 기회를 놓치지 않지!!뿌

라고 자기합리화로 자제력을 뚜까패버린다음 결제해버리고 며칠뒤에 편의점가서 낼룸 집어왔다.????

위스키는 내돈으로 사서 내손에 처음 들어오는 그 순간이 제일 기분 좋은듯.... 두근두근~??

기회를 놓치지 않은 현명한 소비였기 때문에 미련없이 과감하게 뚜따를 해보면,

우선 라벨이 벌의 이미지를 의도적으로 주려고 한 색 조합인지는 모르겠으나 맛과 향에서도 상당히 그에 부합하는 꿀맛이

사르륵 퍼진다.

(병 뚜껑에 증류소를 상징하는 심볼들이 몇개 들어가 있는데 그중에 벌이 그려져있기도 하다.)

그리고 약간 귤같은 느낌의 시트러스도 묻어난다.

약간 오일리한 구석도 있음.

도수때문인지 숙성년수 때문인지는 모르겠으나 뚜따 직후여도 알콜부즈나 스파이시가 크게 느껴지지 않았다.

(요즘 워낙 CS를 집중적으로 마셔서 그럴수도?...???♂?)

특성을 두글자로 표현하면 귤꿀.

아니 꿀귤?아몰랑.

전체적으로 굉장히 여리하고 무난하게 새큼덜큼허다.

셰리캐스크 피니쉬에 16년 숙성을 생각하면서 마신다면 크게 와닿지 않을수 있지만, 이거13만원 주고 들였는데 요즘 다

른 증류소 엔트리 위스키 가격 생각하면 상당히 괜찮다.

(건방진놈들 몇 놈 이쮸???????)

끝으로 보틀로 구입해서 마신다면 경험상 주의 사항으로는,

에어레이션이 오래 되면 안좋은것 같다.

그저그런느낌의 곡물향이 많이 드러나고 귤꿀?꿀귤?의 힘이 많이 빠진다.

꿀벌 날개짓이 시들시들 하는 느낌.

결론은 가볍게 친구들이랑 기분좋게 후딱 해치우기 좋은 위스키!

나중에 면세전용으로 나오는 16년 마데이라 캐스크 구하게 되면 그때 또 얘기해보장!

ABERFELDY 16years

Aberfeldy, the key malt used in Dewar's, the blend famous for its god-tier value.

I'd heard that the duty-free-exclusive Aberfeldy 16 Madeira Cask is a real tasty one, but whenever a duty-free chance actually came up, it's the kind of distillery I just never went looking for, so we never managed to cross paths.

The 16 sold at regular liquor stores and bottle shops is a bourbon + sherry cask finish, so it's different from that duty-free one, and the ABV is 40%, which is just too disappointing for me. So I'd been hesitating for ages when,

as if to say 'Huh? Still not buying? Not even now!? How about NOW!?', it started doing a seductive dance right in front of me at 130,000 won on CU convenience store pickup, and so,
'Yeah.. right... in this messed-up world where even Balvenie DoubleWood 12 costs that much these days, 16 years of aging for that price?

Yes! This is a steal! Yes! I am a wise and smart consumer!! This is an opportunityyy!!! A wise consumer never misses an opportunity!! Bwahaha!!'

- after beating my self-control to a pulp with that self-justification, I paid, and a few days later I went to the convenience store and snatched it right up.

With whisky, the best feeling seems to be that very first moment it lands in your hands, bought with your own money.... heart pounding~

Since it was a wise purchase that didn't miss its opportunity, I boldly cracked it open with zero regrets, and,

first, I'm not sure whether the label colours were chosen to deliberately evoke bees, but the taste and aroma match it pretty well too, with a honey sweetness gently spreading out.

(The bottle cap has several symbols representing the distillery, and one of them is a bee.)

There's also a bit of tangerine-like citrus coming through.

A slightly oily side, too.

Not sure if it's the ABV or the age, but even right after opening I didn't get much alcohol booze or spice.

(Could also be because I've been drinking mostly cask strength lately?...)

If I had to sum up its character in two words: tangerine honey.

Or wait, honey tangerine? Whatever, idk.

Overall it's very delicate and easygoing, pleasantly sweet-and-tangy.

If you drink it with 'sherry cask finish, 16 years old' in mind, it may not strike you much, but I paid 130,000 won for this, and considering what entry-level whiskies from other distilleries cost these days, it's pretty decent.

(There are a few cocky ones out there, aren't there??)

Finally, a word of caution from experience if you buy a whole bottle:

Long aeration doesn't seem to do it any good.

A so-so grainy note comes forward a lot, and the tangerine-honey? honey-tangerine? loses a lot of its power.

It feels like the honeybee's wings are drooping and wilting.

Conclusion: a whisky that's great for polishing off quickly and cheerfully with friends!

If I ever get my hands on the duty-free-exclusive 16 Madeira Cask, let's talk about it again then!
