Glendronach Revival 15years

글렌드로낙 12년 오리지널을 맛있게 마셨다면,

당연히 이 다음은 어떨까 궁금해하게 되고,

그렇게 찾다보면,

글렌드로낙18년 엘러다이스보다 접근성이 좋은 글렌드로낙 15년 리바이벌은 수순같은 선택지가 된다.

글렌드로낙 증류소의 위스키들을 전반적으로 좋아하는 입장에서 나 또한 당연히 너무나 궁금했던,

12년의 업그레이드된 모습은 어떨까 하는 상상을 하며 보틀을 구매 했었고, 이번이 그 세번째 보틀로써 이제는 어떤 느낌

인지 확실히 알게되어 몇자 적어보는,

글렌드로낙 15년 리바이벌.

I'm too spicy~

한편으로 아쉬운 부분이지만,
글렌드로낙 18년 앨러다이스와 같이 올로로소 캐스크만 사용했던 2015년에 단종된 빌리워커 버젼의 글렌드로낙 15년

은 경험을 못해봤다.

고건 참 맛있다고 하든데...

(아숩다. 그땐 지금보다 더 거지였어서 위스키 사먹을 여유가 더 없었다...??)

현재의 글렌드로낙 15년은 마스터디스틸러인 레이첼베리 눈나가 2015년에 단종됬던 제품을 2019년에 구형과는 다른

올로로소+페드로히메네즈 캐스크 조합으로 부활시킨 제품이다.

그래서 이름도 Revival.

(글렌드로낙18년이 시장에 풀리는 물량으로 보나 15년의 캐스크 조합의 변화등으로 보나 짐작하건데 글렌드로낙 증류소

에 올로로소캐스크 재고가 이제 많이 없는거같다...아..앙대...)

잘나가는 동생과 한컷 찰!캭!

전체적인 느낌은 동생격인 글렌드로낙12년 오리지널과 결이 상당히 비슷한 부분이 많기 때문에,

비교 시음한 형태로 맛과 향을 풀어본다.

우선 잔에 담아 놓으면,
색은 12년과 15년 나란히 놓고 보면 큰 차이는 못느낀다.

아니 정말 차이가 없는거야!?

하고 눈을 요래조래 왔다갔다 옮겨가며 비교해 보면 15년이 야아악간 더 진하지만 3살 많은 형인지는 잘 모루겠는정도...

코에 살짝 갖다대면,

역시 글렌드로낙이 표현하려는 그 셰리 캐릭터들이 12년보단 더 짙게 느껴진다.

하지만 그것이 막 압도적인 차이를 보이진 않고,

전체적인 결은 유사하나 약간의 무게감이 더해진 정도의 차이이다.

도수는 15년이 46%로 43%의 12년 대비 더 높지만, 알콜의 찌르는 기운은 15년이 좀 더 안정적이고 알콜부즈가 크게

느껴지지 않아 그래도 3년 형아인 티를 내는듯 하다.

그리고 향에서부터 스파이시가 꽤 느껴지는데,

글렌드로낙의 모든 코어레인지 중에서 가장 스파이시하다고 생각이든다.

스파이시를 뒤따라 향긋한 셰리향, 약간의 다크초콜릿,빵같은 고소함과 끝에 따라오는 약한 시트러스도 느껴진다.

향보단 맛에서 좀 더 진득한 셰리를 느낄 수 있다.

12년 오리지널이 가지고 있는 드로낙표 셰리 느낌을 좀더 무게감있게 풀어낸다.

적당히 무게감있는 셰리와 맛의 끝에선 체리같은 맛도 느껴짐.

쨥쨥!

그리고 따라오는 스파이시!

피니쉬는 약하게 초콜렛이 묻어나오면서 적당한 여운으로 마무리~

음...애초에 스파이시에 대한 큰 거부감이 없다면 맛있게 받아들일수 있는 제품이겠지만, 개인적으로는 입문하는 사람들에

겐 좋은 제품은 아닌것 같다고 마실때마다 생각이 든다.

전체적인 표현들이 12년 오리지널보다 강하고 복합적인 편이라 어느정도 싱글몰트에 익숙해진 사람들에게 어필이 될만한

제품이라고 봄.

그리고 그 밖의 문제점들도 살짝 이야기 해보자면,

12년보단 전체적으로 무게감이 있는편이지만,

두배 가격 이상을 지불할 정도의 차이가 느껴지진 않는다.

그 가격대의 15년 숙성 제품만의 메리트도 크게 느낄수가 없다.

대체할만한 다른 증류소들의 위스키들이 많다...

(예를들면 글렌알라키 15년,맥캘란 15년 더블같은..)
코어레인지 제품간의 격차 밸런스도 역시 아쉽다.

12년보단 조금 나은 정도 이지만, 18년에 비하면 많이 모자르게 느껴진다.

포지션이 애매하다 할 수 있겠다.

차라리 구형처럼 올로로소캐스크만 써서 18년 숙성의 저렴이 버젼으로 타겟했다면 더 통했을지도 모르겠다.

(올로로소 캐스크 재고 부족탓이겠지만...)

현재의 포지션이면 그돈씨 12년 두 보틀을 사 마시던지, 15년 두 보틀 사마실 돈 아껴서 18년 한보틀을 사마시던지 하는

게 낫겠다는 생각이 든다.

어쨋든,

최애 증류소의 15년 제품이지만 뭔가 아쉬운것이 내겐 아픈손가락 같은 느낌이다.

제품을 빡시게 다시 리뉴얼 하던지 아싸리 가격을 글렌알라키15년보다 1~2만원 싸게 내놓던지 하셔야 되지 않을까요 레

그러기 전까진 이제 보틀구매는 안할거 같아요...

Glendronach Revival 15years

If you enjoyed GlenDronach 12 Original,

naturally you start wondering what comes next,

and as you go looking,

the GlenDronach 15 Revival - more accessible than the GlenDronach 18 Allardice - becomes the obvious next step.

As someone who loves GlenDronach's whiskies across the board, I was of course dying to know too,

and I bought a bottle imagining what an upgraded 12 might be like. This is now my third bottle, so I finally know exactly what it's like and figured I'd jot down a few words:

I'm too spicy~

It's a bit of a shame, but
I never got to try the Billy Walker version of the GlenDronach 15, which, like the GlenDronach 18 Allardice, used only oloroso casks and was discontinued in 2015.

People say that one was really delicious...

(Too bad. Back then I was even more broke than I am now, so I had even less room to buy whisky...??)

The current GlenDronach 15 is the product that master distiller Big Sis Rachel Barrie brought back in 2019, after it had been discontinued in 2015, using an oloroso + Pedro Ximenez cask combo different from the old one.

Hence the name: Revival.

(Judging by how little GlenDronach 18 is being released onto the market and by the change in the 15's cask combo, my guess is that the GlenDronach distillery doesn't have much oloroso cask stock left anymore... ah... noooo...)

Since the overall feel has a lot in common with its little brother, the GlenDronach 12 Original,

I'll break down the taste and aroma as a side-by-side tasting.

First, pour it in a glass:
put the 12 and 15 next to each other and you can't really see much difference in colour.

Wait, is there seriously no difference!?

Moving my eyes back and forth between them, the 15 is juuust a tiiiny bit darker, but I honestly can't tell it's the big brother three years older...

Bring it gently to your nose,

and sure enough, the sherry character GlenDronach is going for comes through deeper than in the 12.

But it's not an overwhelming difference;

the overall profile is similar, with just a bit of extra weight added.

The ABV is higher on the 15 at 46% versus 43% for the 12, but the alcohol sting is actually more settled on the 15 and you don't really feel much boozy burn, so it does act like the big brother, three years older.

And you get a fair bit of spice right from the nose -

I'd say it's the spiciest of all GlenDronach's core range.

Following the spice come fragrant sherry, a little dark chocolate, a nutty, bready richness, and a faint citrus trailing at the end.

You get a more sticky, rich sherry on the palate than on the nose.

It takes the Dronach-style sherry of the 12 Original and delivers it with more weight.

Moderately weighty sherry, and at the tail end of the palate you even get something cherry-like.

Smack smack!

And then here comes the spice!

The finish wraps up with a light touch of chocolate and a decent linger~

Hmm... if you don't have a strong aversion to spice in the first place, you'll probably find it delicious, but personally, every time I drink it I think it's not a great bottle for beginners.

Everything it expresses is stronger and more complex than the 12 Original, so I see it as a bottle that'll appeal to people who've already gotten fairly used to single malts.

And to talk a little about some of its other issues:

It's overall weightier than the 12,

but I don't feel a difference worth paying more than double the price for.

I also can't feel much of the merit you'd expect from a 15-year-old at that price point.

There are plenty of whiskies from other distilleries that could replace it...

(For example, GlenAllachie 15, Macallan 15 Double Cask...)
The balance of the gaps between the core range bottles is also disappointing.

It's a little better than the 12, but it feels way short compared to the 18.

You could say its position is awkward.

If they'd used only oloroso casks like the old version and targeted it as a cheaper take on the 18-year-old, maybe it would've landed better.

(Though I guess it's down to the oloroso cask shortage...)

With its current positioning, I think you're better off either buying two bottles of the 12 for that money, or saving what you'd spend on two bottles of the 15 and buying one bottle of the 18.

Anyway,

it's the 15-year-old from my favourite distillery, but something about it falls short, so it's a bit of a sore spot for me.

Shouldn't you either give it a serious overhaul or just price it 10-20k won cheaper than the GlenAllachie 15, Big Sis Rachel?

Until then, I don't think I'll be buying any more bottles...

(What?? You don't care about my taste?? Hmph, grumble grumble...)

But still, GlenDronach is love! Sis!!??
