Love or Hate — 라프로익 10년 vs 하트브라더스 피티드

작년부터 김창수님이 수입해오는,
하트브라더스 독립병입자에서 출시한,
아일라싱글몰트 위스키 피티드.
편의점 가면 그냥 케이스 없이 벌거벗고 서있는 모습으로 쉽게 접할 수 있다.😊

어디에도 표기되어있지 않지만 병의 모양과 색상,아일라 출신인 것으로만 봐도 너무 당연하게 라프로익 증류소 원액이지 싶은 위스키다.

그 동안 따로 마셨을땐 비슷하다 싶었는데, 막상 버티컬로 딱 놓고 시음해보니 차이가 꽤 느껴진다.

우선 컬러.
라프로익10년은 옅은 호박색을 띈다면, 그에 비해 하트브라더스 피티드는 거의 화이트 와인 같은 수준의 옅은 상아색의 컬러감이다.

노즈는 초반의 결은 상당히 비슷하지만 하트브라더스가 조금 더 거칠고, 부즈가 살짝 느껴진다. 그리고 끝에서 옅은 바닐라와 고소함이 느껴지는게 아마 버번 캐스크 숙성 제품이지 싶다.
그러나 두 제품 모두 강한 피트감은 확실해서 만족감이 듬.

팔렛이 차이가 좀 더 확실히 느껴지는데, 물론 두 제품 모두 짭쪼름하고, 과일의 시트러스함, 그리고 바닷속에서 해초를 빨아먹는 듯한 라프로익의 그 느낌 까지 비슷하나,
하트브라더스가 좀더 스파이시하고 특히 오크와 몰트향이 더 잘 느껴진다.
그리고 역시 좀 더 거친느낌.😤😤
더 어리고 거친 그 느낌들이 썩 나쁘게 다가오지 않아서 뭐가 더 좋다라기 보단 취향으로 갈릴 부분이지 싶다.
원래 피트 위스키는 또 그런 호불호 강한 거친 느낌도 매력이니까.

피니쉬 역시 두 제품 모두 강한 피트감으로 길게 뽑히지만, 라프로익은 후추계열의 매큼함과 팔렛보다 오히려 피니쉬에서 오크향이 짙게 나타나고, 하트브라더스는 그에 비해 사과같은 향긋 상큼한 피니쉬가 살짝 짧게 여운을 준다.

버티컬 시음해보고 느낀거지만 개인적으로는 하트브라더스가 라프로익 10년(특히 북미판 43%)대비 훨씬 접근성이 좋아보이고, 심지어 도수가 50%라 한잔한잔 끈적하게 즐길 수 있으며, 라프로익 10년 대비 피트감이 모자르지도 않으면서, 결정적으로 시중에서 판매되는 가격이 라프로익 10년에 비하면 20~30%정도는 싸기 때문에, 가볍게 그러나 강하게 피트감을 느끼고 싶을땐 좋은 선택지가 아닐까 싶다.

그래서 결론은,
나는 라프로익 10년이 더 맛있다.😀

released by the independent bottler Hart Brothers,
an Islay single malt whisky: Peated.
Walk into a convenience store and you'll easily find it standing there naked, no case. 😊

It isn't stated anywhere, but judging just by the bottle shape and colour, and the fact that it's from Islay, it seems pretty obviously to be Laphroaig distillery liquid.

When I drank them separately I thought they were similar, but once I actually lined them up side by side for a vertical tasting, the difference was quite noticeable.

First, colour.
If Laphroaig 10 has a pale amber hue, Hart Brothers Peated by comparison is a pale ivory, almost at white-wine level.

On the nose, the opening texture is quite similar, but Hart Brothers is a bit rougher and there's a touch of booze. And at the end I get faint vanilla and nuttiness, so I'm guessing it's a bourbon-cask matured product.
But both clearly have strong peat, so it's satisfying either way.

The palate shows the difference more clearly. Of course both are salty, have that fruity citrus, and even share that Laphroaig feeling of sucking on seaweed at the bottom of the sea,
but Hart Brothers is spicier, and the oak and malt in particular come through better.
And again, it feels a bit rougher. 😤😤
Those younger, rougher traits don't come across badly at all, so rather than one being better, I think this is where it splits by taste.
After all, with peated whisky that rough, love-it-or-hate-it character is part of the charm.

The finish, too - both draw out long with strong peat, but Laphroaig has a peppery kick, and the oak shows up more deeply in the finish than on the palate, whereas Hart Brothers by comparison leaves a fragrant, fresh, apple-like finish with a slightly shorter linger.

This is what I felt after the vertical tasting: personally, Hart Brothers looks much more approachable than Laphroaig 10 (especially the North American 43% version). It's even 50% ABV so you can enjoy each glass thick and sticky, it doesn't fall short on peat compared to Laphroaig 10, and, crucially, it retails for about 20-30% less than Laphroaig 10. So when you want peat that's light on the wallet but strong on the palate, I think it's a pretty good choice.

So, the conclusion:
I like Laphroaig 10 better. 😀
