아직 닿지 못한 수많은 스카치 위스키들을 뒤로하고 먼저 경험해보고 싶게 만들만큼, 위스키 시장에서 재패니즈 위스키는

그 명성이 자자하다.

그리고 그 명성의 중심에 서있는 위스키는 누가 뭐래도 야마자키 일것이다.

그리고 그 야마자키의 가장 기본이자 근본같은 위스키,

야마자키 12년.

과거부터 현재까지 수많은 위스키 전문가들과 애호가들의 긍정적평가.

현재 기준으로 수많은 증류소들의 12년 숙성 코어레인지 중 거의 최고가로 형성되있는 시세.

(현재기준 데일리샷 최저 판매가 41만원....후달달달..)

스코틀랜드 캠밸타운 그 깡패놈(스프링뱅크10년)보다 더 보기 힘든 접근성.

위린이로써 안마셔 볼 수 없게 만드는 못된 매력을 가진 위스키였다.

너무 궁금해서 웃돈을 주고라도 구해볼까 하다가,

12년 숙성이 한 보틀에 40만원 언저리라 쉽게 손이 가지 않아 우선 한잔 시음 해보고 결정하기로 하고 근처 bar로 뛰어갔

다.

너무나 설레는 마음으로 자리에 앉자마자,

당연히 재패니즈 위스키니까 그럴싸하게 일본말로,

”야마자키 12넨 이빠이 구다사이!!!”

라고 주문을 하...

면 야마자키 12년 병으로 머가리 찍히고 쫓겨날거같아서,

꾹꾹 참고

“야마자키 12년 한잔 주세요.”

라고 한국말로 또박또박 주문했다.

.......
그렇게 한국말 잘해서 건네받은 야마자키 12년 한잔.

잔을 코에 갖다대면 사과나 꽃같은 화사함과 향긋함, 그리고 끝에 살짝 느껴지는 바닐라의 기운, 그리고 파악하기 힘든 다

양한 풍미들이 계속 킁킁대고 싶게 만들었다.

전체적으로 12년 숙성 제품 치고는 복합미와 밸런스가 꽤 좋게 느껴짐.

맛은 달콤상콤하고 가볍고 화사한 느낌에 약간 오일리한 느낌도 든다.

무게감은 그리 있지 않다.

맛이 금방 다 어디론가 달아나서 비어버린다.

피니쉬는 꽃같이 화사한 느낌에 달큰하게 마무리되지만 여운 또한 그리 길진 않다.

(이런 화사한 느낌의 피니쉬는 개인적으로는 발베니 16년 프렌치오크가 굿굿이였다??)

한잔 마셔보고 느낀 기분은,

....헤...?나니코레....?

너무 잘 만든 12년 숙성 위스키임은 절대 부정 할 수 없지만 이걸 40만원 넘게 주고 병으로 들여서 마신다고?

나는 부자가 아니기에 이해할수 없는 시세가 아닐수 없다.

(물론 내가 부자였으면 신경안쓰고 박스로 사서 데일리로 마셨을테지...흐흑...??)

기대를 너무 했기 때문일수도 있고,

취향의 다름을 이해한다 생각함에도 불구하고,

지금의 가격은 나에겐 전혀 메리트가 없는 제품이다.

며칠전에 100주년 기념판으로 라벨 좀 다르게 만들어서 야마자키12년을 50만원 넘게 파는거 보고 식겁했는데 안사길 잘

했다는 생각만 든다.

헤~~~~~~~~~???

한잔의 경험으로 충분했고,

당분간(가격이 내려간다면 모를까) 보틀 구매의향은 전혀 없다.

근데...야마자키는 18년이 찐이라던데...

....그거..그렇게 맛있나...?

YAMAZAKI 12years

Japanese whisky has such a reputation in the whisky market that it makes you want to try it first, even ahead of the countless Scotch whiskies you haven't gotten to yet.

And the whisky standing at the centre of that reputation, whatever anyone says, is Yamazaki.

And the most basic, foundational whisky of Yamazaki:

Yamazaki 12.

Positive reviews from countless whisky experts and enthusiasts, from the past right up to today.

A market price that currently sits at nearly the very top among the 12-year core ranges of countless distilleries.

(Current lowest price on Dailyshot: 410,000 won.... knees shaking...)

Even harder to get your hands on than that Campbeltown thug in Scotland (Springbank 10).

For a whisky newbie like me, it was a whisky with a wicked charm that made it impossible not to try.

I was so curious that I thought about paying a premium to get one,

but a 12-year-old at around 400,000 won a bottle wasn't something I could easily reach for, so I decided to taste a glass first and then decide, and ran to a nearby bar.

The moment I sat down, heart all aflutter,

since it's Japanese whisky, obviously I'd order in convincing Japanese:

"Yamazaki juni-nen ippai kudasai!!!"

...is how I was going to order...

but I felt like I'd get smacked over the head with a Yamazaki 12 bottle and thrown out, so

I held it in, hard,

and said "One glass of Yamazaki 12, please."

ordering clearly and precisely, in Korean.

And so, the glass of Yamazaki 12 I received thanks to my excellent Korean.

Bring the glass to your nose and there's a bright, fragrant apple-and-flower quality, a hint of vanilla at the very end, and a variety of hard-to-pin-down flavours that kept me wanting to sniff and sniff.

Overall, for a 12-year-old, the complexity and balance felt quite good.

The taste is sweet and tangy, light and bright, with a slightly oily feel too.

Not much weight to it.

The flavour quickly runs off somewhere and leaves things empty.

The finish wraps up sweetly with a bright floral feel, but the linger isn't very long either.

(For this kind of bright floral finish, personally the Balvenie 16 French Oak was the good-good one.)

My feeling after one glass:

....Heh...? Nani kore....? (What is this....?)

I absolutely can't deny it's a really well-made 12-year-old whisky, but paying over 400,000 won to bring a bottle home and drink it?

Since I'm not rich, it's a price I just can't understand.

(Of course, if I were rich I'd have bought it by the case without a second thought and drunk it daily... sob...)

Maybe it's because I expected too much,

and even though I like to think I understand that tastes differ,

at the current price it's a product with zero appeal for me.

A few days ago I was shocked to see Yamazaki 12 sold for over 500,000 won just with a slightly different label as a 100th-anniversary edition, and all I can think is that I'm glad I didn't buy it.

Heeeh~~~~~~~~~???

One glass of experience was enough,

and for the time being (unless the price comes down) I have zero intention of buying a bottle.

But... they say that for Yamazaki, the 18 is the real deal...

....is it... really that good...?
