최근 2~3년전 부터 알라키는 다양한 우드피니쉬 제품을 와장창 쏟아내고 있는데, 아마도 부족한 양질의 셰리 오크통을 대

체할 만한 무언가를 찾고자 하는 마음일 것이라 생각이 든다.

그렇게 꾸준히 데이터도 쌓고, 증류소도 안놀리고, 셰리통도 아끼고, 돈도벌고...

그 마음은 충분히 이해하지만 빌리어르신이 위친자들을 상대로 너무 무분별하게 혓바닥 실험을 하고 있는게 아닌가 싶게,

남발하는 우드피니쉬 제품들 중에 크게 와닿은 제품이 많이 없다.

(물론 모든 우드피니쉬 제품을 다 마셔보진 않았지만,안마셔본 제품들도 위스키베이스 등에서도 평들이 썩 좋지 않다...)

현재 리쿼샵등지에서도 쉽게 찾아볼수 있는 제품들이 많다는게 그 증거가 아닐까싶다.

그나마 마셔본것 중 ‘오 이건 좀 괜찮네’ 싶어서 나중에 보틀구매까지 하게 된 건 12년 루비포트우드피니쉬 정도..?

사람입맛이 결국은 다 비슷한지 12년 루비포트우드는 현재는 구하기가 어렵다.

그렇게 알라키 우드피니쉬 제품들에 시큰둥둥하던 작년 하반기 즈음에 올로로소 우드 피니쉬 제품이 ABV 48%로 독일에

서 출시 되었다.

시큰둥둥한 마음과 다소 높은가격, 게다가 국내에서는 당시에 파는곳도 없었고, 몰트바에서도 취급을 안하던때라 시음도

못하는 상황이라 고민고민고민고민고민go민go민go민gogogoGo!Go!Go!질럿!!!!!??

올로로소라는 마법의 주문에 홀려버려서 제2의 자아가깔꿈하게 결제부터 수령까지 완료한다.

알라키15년을 맛깔나게 자주 즐기다 살짝 지루해짐을 느꼈을때 쯤 이 13년 올로로소 우드 피니쉬를 꺼내마셔봄.
무자비한 오크통 실험의 생존자랄까..

우선은, 12년 루비포트만큼 만족도가 있다.??

피니쉬 제품인데도 말리거나 혹은 조려낸 건과류같은 느낌의 꾸덕한 올로로소 캐릭터가 충분히 드러난다.

13년숙성, 48도,뚜따임에도 찌르는 향도 크게 없이 코를 사악 채워준다.

향만큼 맛도 크게 빠지지 않는 느낌.

약간 찐득한 꿀물과 바닐라 느낌도 살짝 올라오고,

끝에서는 오크향과 알라키 특유의 다크초콜릿도 함께 묻어나온다.

스파이시는 크게 느껴지지 않음.

코어레인지 15년과 결이 비슷하면서도 아주 약간 더 포도스러움.

15년보다 저숙성임에 불구하고 현재 시세가 둘이 비슷한 수준인데, 과연 그돈 주고 사마실만한가에 대한 질문을 해본다

충분히 그 가격에 비슷하지만 다른 알라키를 경험해볼만한 가치는 있다고 본다.

아아...?혹시 이런걸 노리고 자꾸 오크통 실험 하는건가여 빌리옹?

(아니 가만, 근데 결국 얘도 셰리통아녀!????)

만족해서 천천히 마시면서 변화를 즐기는중.

GlenAllachie Oloroso Wood Finish 13years ABV 48%

Over the last 2-3 years, GlenAllachie has been pumping out a whole flood of wood-finish releases, and my guess is they're looking for something that can stand in for the good-quality sherry casks that are in short supply.

That way they keep stacking up data, keep the distillery from sitting idle, save on sherry casks, make some money...

I totally get the thinking, but with so many wood finishes being churned out, it sometimes feels like Grandpa Billy is running tongue experiments a little too recklessly on us whisky addicts, because not many of them have really hit home for me.

(Of course I haven't tried every single wood finish, but even the ones I haven't tried don't get great reviews on Whiskybase and the like...)

I think the proof is that a lot of them are still easy to find sitting on liquor store shelves right now.

Of the ones I've tried, the only one that made me go 'oh, this one's actually pretty good' and later buy a whole bottle was the 12 Year Ruby Port Wood Finish..?

I guess everyone's taste buds are pretty similar in the end, because the 12 Year Ruby Port Wood is hard to find these days.

(Hehe, but I've got a bottle~ 😝)

So, around the second half of last year, while I was feeling totally meh about GlenAllachie's wood finishes, an Oloroso Wood Finish came out in Germany at 48% ABV.

Between the meh feelings, the slightly steep price, and the fact that nobody in Korea was selling it at the time and malt bars weren't stocking it either, so I couldn't even try a dram, I thought and thought and thought and thought and thought-go, thought-go, go-go-go GO! GO! GO! Zealots, attack!!!!! 😂

Bewitched by the magic spell that is 'Oloroso', my second self neatly took care of everything from checkout to delivery.

(A payment spell that lands a critical hit on sherry fanatics: Oloroso~ Pedro Ximénez!! Yep, paying right now~)

I'd been happily enjoying the GlenAllachie 15 a lot, and right around when I started getting a little bored of it, I took out this 13 Year Oloroso Wood Finish and gave it a go.
A survivor of the merciless cask experiments, you could say..

First off, it's every bit as satisfying as the 12 Ruby Port. 👍

Even though it's a finish, the rich, dense Oloroso character, like dried or stewed dried fruit, comes through plenty.

13 years old, 48%, and even though it was freshly opened there's hardly any prickly sharpness; it just smoothly fills up your nose.

The palate doesn't fall far behind the nose either.

A slightly sticky honey-water and a touch of vanilla come up,

and at the end, oak and GlenAllachie's signature dark chocolate come through together.

Not much spice to speak of.

It's similar in texture to the core-range 15, but just a tiny bit grapier.

Even though it's younger than the 15, the two currently sell for about the same price, so if you ask whether it's worth paying that much for it,
Yes! 👍

I think it's well worth that price to experience a GlenAllachie that's similar but different.

Ahh... 🤔 Is this what you're aiming for with all these cask experiments, Billy?

(Wait, hold on, but isn't this one a sherry cask in the end too!? 🤣)

I'm happy with it, so I'm sipping it slowly and enjoying how it changes.

(Of course, the more I think like this, the faster it empties 😂)
