평소에 하이볼을 그렇게 즐겨하는 편은 아니지만,

이따금씩 목구멍이 간질간질 턱턱 막히는 기분이 들거나,

요즘처럼 한 여름 날씨에 맥주랑은 또다른 무언가를 씨원하게 목구멍으로 때려넣고 시작 하고 싶을때,

그럴때면 주섬주섬 챙겨서 하이볼을 한잔씩 말아먹게 되는데,

그동안 집구석에서 말아 먹어본 하이볼 기주? 가히 베스트라 할 수 있는 위스키.
바로,

글렌모렌지 오리지널 10년.

사실 일반적인 업장에서 말아주는 하이볼에 사용되는 위스키는 대부분,

산토리가쿠빈, 제임슨, 짐빔 뭐 대충 이런류들이고, 뭐 업장이 아니더라도 집구석에서 말아먹는 아아니 고급지게 표현해서

홈텐딩으로 즐기는 하이볼 기주로는 조금 더 보테가 해서 몽키숄더 정도일 것이다.

(물론 내가 그렇게 즐겼다)

그러던 어느날 니트로 쪼록쪼록 마시기엔 막 나쁜것도 아니지만 그래도 뭔가 좀 아쉽고 허전한 마음을 씻어버릴 수 없게

만드는 글렌모렌지 오리지널에 아주 살짝 섭섭해져 가던 그때,

'아니 그냥 사치스럽게 하이볼로 한잔 말아먹어보까??' 싶어서,

한잔 취향 껏 말아 먹어 봤떠니 으앙 대.존.맛! 이였다.

그렇게 하이볼로 말아먹은 이후로는 항상 떨어지기 전에 리쿼샵에서 세일 하는 타이밍 봐서 한병씩 사놓고는 한다.

철저하게 개인취향이 녹아있는 집구석에서 맛있게 하이볼을 마시는 방법은...

우선 개더운 한 여름 바깥 날씨에 지쳐 집구석에 터덜터덜 들어와서, 하이볼 만들 잔을 냉동실에 넣는다.

그리고 바로 샤워를 하러 들어가서, 세상에서 얻은 번뇌와 묵은 때를 씻겨낸다.

묵은 때 싸악 벗기고 나와서 머리를 대충 말리고, 냉동실에서 차갑게 얼어가고있는 하이볼 잔을 꺼낸다.

그리고, 글렌모렌지 오리지널을 40~45ml 정도를 잔에 붓는다.

(지거가 없으면 그냥 소주잔에 우리가 흔히 따라 마시는 소주량 정도를 부으면 됨. 어차피 집구석이니까 노상관)

그리고, 냉동실에 대충 얼려져 있는 각얼음 한 6개 때려넣고,

캐나다 드라이 진저에일이나 나랑드 사이다 제로를 꼴꼴 붓는다.(개취로는 약 200ml정도)

그 다음 하이볼 해먹는 사람은 무조건 가지고 있는 왜 그 마트가면 있는 욕망의 항아리 처럼 생긴 그 레몬즙이나 라임즙을

옆구리를 꾸욱 눌러서 잔에 한발 쏴 준다.

그리고 길죽한 바 스푼 따위는 집구석 하이볼과는 어울리지 않기 때문에 대충 젓거락으로 한 열바퀴 정도 휘저어준다.

그리고, 바로 한손은 옆구리에 끼고 다른 한손은 하이볼 잔들어서 입술이 얼음을 살짝 막아낼정도까지만 입을 벌리고 바로

목구멍으로 부왈칵부왈칵! 때려넣는다.

그렇게 한잔 때려넣으면 내가 바로 오늘 하루 세상에서 가장 열심히 산 사람이 되버리는 것이다.

세상 가장 고생한 나에게 주는 한잔의 휴식.
글렌모렌지 하이볼(탄산수를 나랑드 제로로 해도 좋음.)

개인적으로는 버번캐스크에서 피니쉬된 싱글몰트 위스키들이 하이볼로 말아 먹었을때 만족도가 높은 편인데, 그런 면에

서 글렌모렌지 오리지널 10년은 갓성비 하이볼이 아닐 수가 없다.(그보다 더 비싼 버번캐스크 숙성 위스키들이 맛이 더 좋

을수는 있겠지만 가격 생각하면 글쎄 그걸 하이볼로 굳이...?)

그저 탄산음료인것 같으면서도 바닐라같은 달달함과 몰트스러운 향이 적절히 풍겨지는 맛있는 하이볼이 완성된다.

그리고 글렌모렌지 오리지널은 하이볼 뿐만 아니라 실은 니트로도 가격대비 생각하면 꽤 좋은 위스키이다.

버번캐스크 숙성 답게 노즈에서 부터 바닐라같은 달달함이 지배적으로 나타나고, 부즈도 뚜따 직후가 아니라면 많이 얌전

해지는 편이다.아주 약한 시트러스도 존재.

맛도 모렌지 특유의 화사함을 갖고 있고, 역시 바닐라가 지배적이다. 스파이시가 크게 있진 않아서 입문자들도 크게 부담

없이 마실 수 있는 수준.

하지만 맛에서 바디감이 느껴지거나 하진 않는다.
피니쉬 역시 바닐바닐바닐라.

여운이 있진 않고 깔끔하게 끝나는 편이다.

그리고 글렌모렌지 오리지널은 한잔 다 마시고 남은 잔향에서 퍼지는 바닐라향이 아주 좋기 때문에, 한잔 비우고 바로 세

척하기 보단 잔향을 킁캉킁캉 계속 맡고 있기를 추천.

(남들이 보면 바보로 볼 수 있는 단점이 있다.원래 바보라면 괜찮다.)

이제 본격 여름 시즌이라 한두잔 자꾸말아먹다보니 어느새 1/3정도만 남은것 같은데 어디 또 세일 안하나...

GLENMORANGIE The Original 10years

I'm not usually that big on highballs,

but every now and then, when my throat feels all itchy and choked up,

or like these days in the middle-of-summer heat, when I want to kick things off by chugging something ice-cold down my throat that's something other than beer,

at times like that I fumble around and mix myself a highball,

and of all the highball base whiskies I've mixed at home so far? The one I'd dare call the absolute best.
That would be,

Glenmorangie Original 10.

Actually, the whisky used in the highballs most regular bars mix for you is mostly

Suntory Kakubin, Jameson, Jim Beam, that sort of thing, and even outside of bars, for highballs you mix at home - nope, let me put it more fancily - highballs enjoyed through home-tending, if you splurge a bit more, it'd be something like Monkey Shoulder.

(That's certainly how I enjoyed them.)

Then one day, I was starting to feel a teeny bit let down by Glenmorangie Original, which isn't bad at all for sipping neat but still left me with a nagging sense that something was missing that I just couldn't shake,

and I thought, 'Why not just be extravagant and mix it into a highball??'

so I mixed one to my taste and, oh my god, it was. Freaking. Delicious!

Ever since mixing it into a highball, I always keep an eye out for sales at the liquor shop and grab a bottle before I run out.

My thoroughly personal-taste way to enjoy a delicious highball at home is...

First, drag yourself home, worn out by the scorching summer heat outside, and put your highball glass in the freezer.

Then go straight into the shower and wash off all the worldly anguish and grime you've picked up.

Once you're out with all that grime scrubbed away, roughly dry your hair and take the highball glass, now getting icy cold, out of the freezer.

Then pour about 40-45ml of Glenmorangie Original into the glass.

(If you don't have a jigger, just pour about as much as you'd usually pour into a soju glass. It's your own home anyway, so who cares.)

Then chuck in about six ice cubes that have been roughly frozen in the freezer,

and glug-glug in some Canada Dry ginger ale or Narangd Cider Zero. (About 200ml to my taste.)

Next, grab that lemon or lime juice every highball drinker definitely owns - you know, the one from the supermarket shaped like a little jar of desire - squeeze its sides hard and fire one shot into the glass.

And since a long bar spoon and the like just doesn't suit a home highball, give it a rough ten or so stirs with chopsticks.

Then, right away, with one hand on your hip and the other lifting the highball glass, open your mouth just wide enough for your lips to hold back the ice, and chug it straight down your throat, gulp gulp gulp!

Knock one back like that and I instantly become the person who worked the hardest in the whole world today.

A glass of rest for me, the one who's had it hardest in the world.

Personally, I tend to be most satisfied when I mix highballs with single malts finished in bourbon casks, and in that sense, Glenmorangie Original 10 can't be anything but a god-tier value highball. (Pricier bourbon-cask-matured whiskies might taste better, but considering the price, well... would you really bother putting those in a highball...?)

What you get is a tasty highball that seems like just a soda, yet gives off a nice balance of vanilla-like sweetness and malty aroma.

And Glenmorangie Original is actually a pretty good whisky neat too, for the price - not just in highballs.

True to its bourbon-cask maturation, a vanilla-like sweetness dominates from the nose onward, and the booze calms down a lot as long as it isn't freshly opened. There's also a very faint citrus note.

The palate has that signature Glenmorangie brightness, and again vanilla dominates. There isn't much spice, so it's at a level even beginners can drink without much trouble.

But you don't really get any body on the palate.
The finish is also vanilla-vanilla-vanilla.

There's not much lingering - it tends to end clean.

And since the vanilla aroma that spreads from the leftover scent after you finish a glass of Glenmorangie Original is really lovely, I recommend not washing the glass right after emptying it, but sniff-sniffing that leftover scent for a while instead.

(The downside is that other people might think you're an idiot. If you're already an idiot, no problem.)

Now that it's proper summer, I keep mixing a glass or two, and before I knew it there's only about a third left... isn't there another sale somewhere...
