작년 이맘 때 쯤, 실은 발베니 15년 싱글배럴(셰리)을 싸게 좀 사보려고 여기저기 알아보다가 몇 번의 실패 끝에 화딱지가

나서 순간 자제력과 판단력을 상실하고, 아몰랑 똑같은 발베니에서 만든 15년인데 마데이라도 맛있겠지! 이거 안마셔봤

받아온,

발베니 15년 마데이라

그땐 대체 무슨 정신이였는지 정말 아무 정보도 모르고 그냥 발베니 15년 인것만 보고 샀기 때문에, 위스키 스펙도 집구석

에서 천천히 살펴보게 됬다.

라벨과 케이스도 핑크핑크 하지만,

MADEIRA CASK,15, David C.Stewart 레터링이 좀 더 진한 핑크색으로 반짝반짝인다. (요건 맘에듬.)

숙성은 아메리칸 오크 캐스크 15년 숙성 후 + 수 개월 마데이라 캐스크 숙성 피니쉬 제품이다.

색깔은 대부분의 세월을 아메리칸 오크 캐스크에서 지내와서 그런지 진한편은 아니다.(약간 섭섭.)

도수는 43도. (역시 섭섭)

구매가 36~37 (최고 섭섭)

(지가 사놓고 뭐가 섭섭한거지...)
다음부턴 꼭 면세로 사라 그지깽깽이야.

눈탱이 맞은 기분이라 볼때마다 눙물이 흐르고 가슴이 메이고 손발이 부들부들 떨려서 한동안 뚜따를 못하다가 몇몇 지인

들이 비행기 타러 가서 이따금씩 이거 좋은거냐고 물어보고 면세로 샀다고 자랑질을 한번씩 하는 바람에 넘모넘모 꼴보기

시러서 뚜따해버렸다.

(지금은 반병 정도 마신 상태인데 진즉 땄어야 했음. 따고나니 오히려 마음이 편안...)

맛과 향에 대해 이야기를 해보면,

뚜따여도 알콜부즈가 크게 느껴지지 않고, 상당히 부드럽게 다가온다.

발베니표 꿀내음도 살짝 나긴하는데 그 캐릭터가 강하진 않다.

약간의 복숭아 같은 과실향과 시트러스도 살짝 들어온다.

전체적으로 달큰한 향보단 향긋하고 시트러스함이 가볍게 느껴진다.

잔에 따르고 한 10분 정도 냅두면 아메리칸오크캐스크 탓인지 바닐라향이 좀 열리면서 약간의 달달함도 보여주긴함.
혀에 적셔보면 개인적으로는 향보다는 맛이 더 좋다.

단맛보단 약간의 고소함과 자두같은 상큼한 맛이 끝에서 살짝 느껴지고,

과하지 않은 스파이시가 기분좋게 작동한다.

근데 왜인지는 모르겠는데 아일라 태생도 아닌것이 살짝 짜다고 느껴지는 부분도 있다. (기분탓인가...)

발베니 15년 싱글배럴이랑은 결이 그냥 아주 많이 틀리고, 무게감도 다르다.

그래도 맛에서는 약간의 무게감이 느껴지긴 하는데, 도수가 좀 더 높았더라면 하는 아쉬움이 있다.

(43도는 너무 박해요. 데이빗스튜어트어르신...)

그리고 약간의 오일리한 구석도 있음.

피니쉬는 화사하고 가벼운 느낌의 여운이 적당하게 뽑힌다.

전체적으로 가벼운 느낌과 적당한 스파이시에 크게 거부감이 없는 사람들에게 굉장히 여유롭고 부드러운 싱글몰트 위스키

라는 인상을 줄수 있을것 같다.

발베니 더블우드 12년이랑 비교 시음도 해봤었는데,

아무래도 향은 더블우드 12가 좀 더 발베니 스러운 달콤달콤한 꿀 느낌이 잘 살아있다.

개인적으로 향은 발베니 더블우드 12가 더 취향에 맞다.

(물론 에어레이션 잘 되어있는 더블우드 12년)

근데 맛은 마데이라 15년이 좀 더 취향이다.

조금 더 무게감이 있고 스파이시도 약간 더 느껴지고.

부드럽다는 측면에선 둘이 비슷하나, 15년 마데이라가 조금 더 컴플렉스한 부분이 있다.

15년 마데이라도 에어레이션이 되갈수록 점점 더 향이 열리고 맛이 좋아짐.

무게감있고 꾸덕꾸덕한 셰리 느낌을 좋아하는 사람들은 실망할수 있겠지만,

화사하고 향긋하고 시트러스한 가볍게 즐기기 좋은 위스키에 관심 있다면 구매해볼법한 위스키이다.

물론 면세로만.

The Balvenie Madeira Cask 15years

Around this time last year, I was actually hunting all over for a cheap-ish bottle of Balvenie 15 Single Barrel (Sherry), and after a few failures I got so fed up that I momentarily lost all self-control and judgment and went, "Whatever, it's a 15-year-old made by the same Balvenie, so the Madeira must be tasty too! I've never tried this one! I was secretly curious anyway!! If they don't have the other one, I'll just buy this! No wait! It's even cheaper than the Single Barrel! This is an extremely smart purchase!! Let's... let's goooo!!!!!!!!" and,

in a brainless, broke-as-a-joke, total-meltdown overspending party, I bought a duty-free line product at a regular liquor shop - for the mid-to-high 300,000 won range, no less - and brought home one bottle of

Balvenie 15 Madeira.

I have no idea what I was thinking back then. I bought it knowing absolutely nothing, just because I saw "Balvenie 15", so I only got around to checking the whisky's specs slowly at home.

The label and box are all pink-pink,

but the MADEIRA CASK, 15, David C. Stewart lettering sparkles in a deeper pink. (This part I like.)

It's matured for 15 years in American oak casks + finished for a few months in Madeira casks.

The color isn't very deep, probably because it spent most of its life in American oak casks. (A little disappointing.)

ABV is 43%. (Also disappointing.)

Price paid: 360-370K won. (THE most disappointing.)

(Why am I disappointed about something I bought myself...)
Next time, make sure you buy it duty-free, you broke fool.

It felt like I'd been ripped off, so every time I looked at it tears welled up, my chest ached and my hands and feet trembled, and I couldn't bring myself to open it for a while. But then a few friends of mine went off to catch flights and every now and then asked me whether this one's any good, and bragged that they'd bought it duty-free, and it got sooo annoying to look at that I just opened it.

(I've drunk about half the bottle now, and I should've opened it ages ago. Once it was open, I actually felt at peace...)

Talking about the nose and palate,

even freshly opened, the alcohol booze isn't very noticeable, and it comes across quite smooth.

There's a hint of that signature Balvenie honey, but the character isn't strong.

A little peach-like fruitiness and a touch of citrus come through too.

Overall, it's more fragrant and lightly citrusy than sweet.

If you pour it and leave it for about 10 minutes, some vanilla opens up, maybe thanks to the American oak casks, and it shows a bit of sweetness too.
When I wet my tongue with it, personally I like the palate better than the nose.

Rather than sweetness, there's a bit of nuttiness and a tangy, plum-like flavor at the end,

and a not-too-much spiciness works pleasantly.

But for some reason, even though it's no Islay baby, there's a part that feels slightly salty. (Maybe it's just me...)

It's very, very different in character from the Balvenie 15 Single Barrel, and the weight is different too.

There's still some weight on the palate, but I do wish the ABV were a bit higher.

(43% is too stingy, Mr. David Stewart, sir...)

And there's a slightly oily side to it too.

The finish is bright and light, with a moderate lingering.

Overall, I think it could come across as a very relaxed, smooth single malt whisky to people who don't mind a light feel and moderate spice.

I also did a side-by-side tasting with the Balvenie DoubleWood 12,

and on the nose the DoubleWood 12 definitely has more of that sweet honey vibe that's so Balvenie.

Personally, the nose of the Balvenie DoubleWood 12 suits my taste better.

(A well-aerated DoubleWood 12, of course.)

But on the palate, the Madeira 15 is more my taste.

A bit more weight, and a bit more spice too.

They're similar in terms of smoothness, but the 15 Madeira has a bit more complexity.

The 15 Madeira also opens up more on the nose and tastes better the more it gets aerated.

People who love a weighty, thick, sticky sherry style might be disappointed,

but if you're interested in a bright, fragrant, citrusy whisky that's nice for easy drinking, it's worth buying.

Duty-free only, of course.
