Macallan Enigma

늘 채우는 시간보다 비우는 시간이 빠른 술쟁이에다가,

어째서 내 월급만 빼고 다오르지?

이거 혹시 몰래카메라인가?

통장에는 왜 자꾸 0이 하나씩 줄어드는거지?

통장에 도둑놈이 사는건가?

FBI의 음모인가?

아니 도대체 이해가 안되네? (안되긴 뭐가안돼 그냥 니가 통장도둑놈이지)

하고 의심하게 되는 이 지옥같은 인플레이션 요지경세상속에서 어떻게 하면 조금이라도 비우는 속도를 늦추면서도, 큰 돈

을 들이지 않고 새롭고 맛있는 위스키를 멈추지 않고 경험하며 즐길 수 있을까에 대한 고민을 하다보면 문득 묘책이 떠오

른다.

우선 깨톡을 열고 주문을 외워본다.

'님 주말에 모함?? 너네집 놀러가도됨?'

주변에 본인처럼 위스키와 사랑에 빠진 위스키환자 친구들이 하나둘씩은 존재하니, 그들을 소환하여 최대한 알랑방귀를

뀌면서 집으로의 초대를 받아내고 결국 최종목적인 그들의 술장을 털어버리는것.

친구들 집의 위스키를 엔젤스쉐어 해버리는것이다.

물론 여기서 엔젤은 나다.

(라고 얘기는 하지만 이 환자놈들도 호구는 아니라서 마냥 친구스쉐어를 당하고만 있지는 않기 때문에, 결국 내 술을 챙겨

가야하고, 내술도 쉐어해야되고 그러면 결국 내술도 줄어드는건데 아니 그럼 대체 이게 무슨 의미람?)

후..답없는 술쟁이놈들.

그렇게 내 피를 짜주고 친구들 피를 수혈 받듯 마시게 된 남의 술 남의 위스키,

맥캘란 이니그마.(면세라인)

근데 이상하다.

매번 이렇게 여러 친구들의 위스키를 털러?털리러? 갈때마다 집구석에 다들 맥캘란 이니그마는 한병씩 가지고들 있었다.

나는 면세찬스때마다 사고싶을땐 없던데, 세상 나만 빼고 구하기 쉬운 위스키였던 것인가 싶다.

(나랑 잘 안맞는듯ㅠㅠ)

어쨌든 내가 들인 보틀이 아닌데도 이미 익숙한 위스키가 되어있다.
맥캘란18년의 건방이 하늘을 찌르는 이 시국에, 면세로 18년 처럼 만족감을 줄 수 있는 이니그마는 면세찬스에서 늘 구매

리스트에 올렸던 아이다.

(근데 올해 맥캘란 제품 가격 인상 및 환율로 인해서 면세가격이 환율 따라서는 한화로 40만원도 넘어 가버려서 이건 이제

이거대로 참 난감하다)

그나마도 나와는 잘 안맞는지 내가 구하고 싶을땐 늘 품절.품절.품절.

그놈의 퀘스트만 맨날 있고ㅠㅠ 맥캘란 마!니 장사하나!지금!(맥리둥절)

결국 내 위스키(라고 쓰고 피땀눈물이라고 읽는다)와 맞바꿔가며 다른 위스키 환자들의 이니그마를 한병 가까이 마시게

되니 더이상 구매하고 싶은 생각도 안든다.

(하지만 면세 위시리스트엔 항상 올려져있죠)

그리고 적어보는 한잔, 아니 한병에 대한 경험.

향은 맥캘란이 보여주는 특유의 건과류 느낌의 꾸덕한 셰리와 바닐라 같은 달큰함이 느껴진다.

아주 맥캘란 스러운 꾸달꾸달 리치한 그 세리 느낌.

그리고 오히려 향에서는 맥캘란 18년(2022 릴리즈 기준)보다 좀 더 밸런스 잡혀있는 다양함을 표현하는 느낌.

맛도 잘 말린 건과류의 느낌의 꾸덕함과 셰리 맛이 그대로 혀를 펀치! 그리고 쿰쿰한 오크통의 맛과 질감이 혓바닥에 계속

묻어있다.

맛있는 셰리캐스크 위스키들에서 느껴지는 부담스럽지 않은 스파이시도 살짝 나타남.

피니쉬는 개인적으로는 맥캘란 18보다는 다소 거칠지만 그래도 꾸덕한 셰리향이 상당히 길게 여운을 남긴다.

현재의 맥캘란 18년이 구하기가 어렵고 가격이 좀 부담스럽지만 그래도 맥캘란이 표현하는 셰리의 느낌과 질감을 상대적

으로 저렴하게 경험하고 싶다면, 당연히 당연하게 맥캘란 이니그마를 구매해야 된다고 생각한다.

맥캘란 18년보다 더맛있냐 맛없냐의 문제는 아니고, 디테일한 부분에서의 개인 취향의 차이라고 느껴질뿐,

충분히 맥캘란 스러운 캐릭터를 잘 담고 있는 맛있는 위스키임에는 틀림없다.

나도 면세찬스로 한병 언넝 들였으면 좋겠다.......

아니다 아니그냥 누가한병줬으면....

아니다 아니그냥 니들꺼 뺏어먹을래...근데이제내껀마시지말고....

조만간 또 털러가야지....

Macallan Enigma

I'm a booze hound who always empties bottles faster than I fill them, and on top of that:

How come everything goes up except my salary?

Is this some kind of hidden-camera prank?

Why does my bank account keep losing a zero?

Is there a thief living in my bank account?

Is it an FBI conspiracy?

I seriously don't get it? (What's not to get — YOU'RE the bank account thief)

In this hellish, topsy-turvy inflation world that makes me suspect all that, whenever I rack my brain over how I could slow down the emptying even a little, while still continuing to experience and enjoy new, tasty whiskies without spending big money, a brilliant plan suddenly comes to mind.

First, open KakaoTalk and chant the magic spell.

'Hey, what u up to this weekend?? Can I come over to ur place?'

Since there are always a few whisky-patient friends around who, just like me, have fallen in love with whisky, you summon them, suck up to them as hard as you possibly can, score an invitation to their place, and in the end achieve the ultimate goal: raiding their liquor cabinet.

Turning the whisky in your friends' homes into the angels' share.

The angel here being me, of course.

(That's what I say, but these whisky patients aren't suckers either, so they don't just sit there getting friends'-shared. In the end I have to bring my own bottles, and share my own booze too, which means my booze goes down as well — so what on earth is even the point??)

Sigh.. hopeless booze hounds, all of us.

And so, the whisky I drank from someone else's stash — as if I were squeezing out my own blood and getting a transfusion of my friends' blood in return:

Macallan Enigma (duty-free line).

But here's the weird thing.

Every time I went over to raid? (get raided?) various friends' whisky like this, every single one of them had a bottle of Macallan Enigma lying around at home.

Whenever I wanted to buy one during a duty-free chance, it was never there, so I guess it was a whisky that was easy to get for everyone in the world except me.

(I guess we're just not meant to be T_T)

Anyway, even though it's not a bottle I brought home myself, it's already become a familiar whisky.
In these times when Macallan 18's arrogance is sky-high, the Enigma — which can give you 18-like satisfaction at duty-free — is a kid I always put on my shopping list whenever a duty-free chance came along.

(But this year, thanks to Macallan's price hikes and the exchange rate, the duty-free price can go over 400,000 won depending on the exchange rate, so now that's its own kind of headache)

And even then, maybe we're just not compatible, because whenever I want to get it: sold out. Sold out. Sold out.

There's only ever that darn "quest" T_T Oi, Macallan! What kind of business are you running right now! (Mac-fused)

In the end, trading away my own whisky (written as "whisky," read as "blood, sweat and tears"), I ended up drinking nearly a whole bottle's worth of other whisky patients' Enigma, so I don't even feel like buying it anymore.

(But it's always on my duty-free wishlist, of course)

And so I write down my experience of one glass — no, one bottle.

On the nose, you get Macallan's signature thick sherry with a dried-fruit feel, plus a vanilla-like sweetness.

That very Macallan-ish, thick, dense, rich sherry vibe.

And if anything, on the nose it feels more balanced and expresses more variety than Macallan 18 (based on the 2022 release).

On the palate too, the density of well-dried fruit and the sherry flavor punch your tongue straight on! And the musty flavor and texture of the oak cask keep clinging to your tongue.

A little of that unobtrusive spiciness you find in tasty sherry cask whiskies shows up as well.

The finish, personally, is somewhat rougher than Macallan 18, but the thick sherry aroma still lingers for quite a long time.

The current Macallan 18 is hard to get and a bit of a burden price-wise, but if you want to experience Macallan's take on sherry and its texture relatively cheaply, then naturally, of course, I think you should buy the Macallan Enigma.

It's not a question of whether it's tastier than Macallan 18 or not — it just feels like a difference in personal taste in the details;

it's without a doubt a tasty whisky that captures the Macallan character really well.

I wish I could hurry up and bring home a bottle with a duty-free chance too.......

No, wait, actually I just wish someone would give me a bottle....

No, wait, actually I'll just steal yours... but from now on, don't drink mine....
