2023 서울국제주류& 와인박람회

모여랏! 애주가동산!

지난 6월 22~24일동안 열렸었던 2023 서울국제주류&와인박람회.
자칭 애주가로써, 당연히 참석해야 마땅(?)하다 생각했던 박람회였기 때문에 사전등록 후에 살포시 다녀왔었다.

(올해는 애초에 현장등록은 받지도 않았다...우리나라 애주가들 너무 많아!)

위스키 부스가 많진 않았지만 어쨌든 장장 4시간을 목마른 하이에나 마냥 이 부스 저 부스 기웃기웃 거리며 많이도 받아

마셨던 좋은 기억이 아직도 생생하다.

몇 안되던 위스키 부스들도 열심히 찾아가며 시음하던 ?,

규모를 꽤 크게 벌려놨었던, BEX스피리츠코리아 부스에도 당연히 방앗간 참새마냥 짹짹 날아가서 시음을 했었다.

(BEX스피리츠코리아는 국내에 버팔로 트레이스,스테그주니어 같은 버번위스키 매니아들은 다 알법한 버번위스키를 수입

하는 유통사다.)

개인적으로 버번에는 크게 감흥을 못느끼는 타입이기 때문에, 부스를 보자마자 다른것보다 스카치 몰트 위스키 제품 시음

이 가능했던 LOST DISTILLERY 라인이 놓여있던 곳으로 향했다.

솔직히 처음 들어보는 제품이였기 때문에 궁금함에 두근두근했었다.

관계자 분 설명에 따르면,

지금은 존재하지 않는 스코틀랜드 각 지역에서 화려한 과거를 가졌던 증류소를 어쨌니저쨌니 설명을 하셨었는데, 설명이

부족했는지 내 이해력이 부족했는지 그때 당시에는 없어졌던 증류소를 다시 세워 제품이 출시된듯이 이해를 해버렸었다.

아마... 설명을 듣던 도중 옆에 오셔서 시음 희망 하셨던 여자 두분 때문에 설명에대한 이해도와 기억에 왜곡이 발생했던것

같다.

두분이 오시자마자 한 제품을 픽해서 시음해보겠다고 했는데,

두분 다 시음 하시자마자 갑자기,

맛과 향에 감동하셨는지 이마에 ?자가 그려지고 없던 팔자주름이 생기면서, 팔자주름이 턱밑까지 내려오고 차마 고개를

젓지는 못하고 동공을 절레절레 하시더니 으읍! 이라는 시음평을 남기시고 홀연히 떠나버리셨다.

(그거 피트 위스키라고 설명해주셨었는데...)

어쨌든 우리도 대충 설명을 듣고, 그날 시음 가능했던 3종의 제품을 모두 시음했다.

셰리캐릭터가 살짝 묻어있던 과거 하이랜드 지역의 증류소였던 JERICHO,

과거의 캠밸타운 위스키들은 아일라만큼 스모크했나 싶었던 DALARUAN,

설명을 안듣고 마셨어도 왠지 태생을 알아차렸을 법한 과거 아일라에 존재했다는 증류소 LOSSIT까지.
3종 제품 모두 지금은 사라진 증류소들의 맛과 향을 재현하기 위해, 남겨진 기록물들과 조언,기억들을 조사하고 연구하여

여러 증류소들의 원액을 받아 그때의 그 증류소들의 특색을 재현시켜 블렌딩한 블렌디드 몰트 스카치 위스키 NAS 제품이

다.

(는 그날 설명은 다 잊어묵어서 집에 와서 따로 찾아봤다.)

그 중 시음했던 위스키 중에 가장 취향에 맞아서 한 보틀 구매하고,

설명 듣던 중간에 오셨던 여자분들이 감동에 동공 지진을 일으켰던 그 위스키,

LOST DISTILLERY LOSSIT Classic Selection

사실 여자분들이 그렇게까지나 절레절레 할 정도의 피트감은 느껴지진 않고,

부담없을 정도의 적당한 피트와 스모크,

아주 약한 바닐라와 프레쉬한 과일향,

NAS 치고는 거부감드는 부즈가 없고,

굉장히 편안하게 마실 수 있을 만한,

시중에 판매 되는 곳이 많이 없어서 일반적인 시세는 알 수 없고 주류박람회 행사가였는지는 모르겠지만 8.5만원이라는

가격은 충분히 수긍할만한 위스키였다.

잔에 한잔 따라 놓으면,

NAS제품이고 보틀과 케이스에 캐스크에 대한 정보가 없긴 하지만,
잔에 담긴 색이 밝은 호박색인것이 딱 봐도 버번캐스크 숙성 제품이다.

(공식홈페이지에 따르면, 논칠필티드&내츄럴컬러이기도 함.)

잔을 코에 갖다 놓으면,

은은한 몰트향이 몰트위스키임을 알게 해주고, 피트보단 스모크향이 그윽하게 퍼진다. 프레쉬하고 달달한 과일향도 살짝

느껴짐.

하지만 라가불린 16년 처럼 막 뿜어져나오는 강려크한 스모크는 아니고,

라프로익이나 아드백같은 내 코 안에 종합병원 개원되는 그런 느낌도 아니다.

아일라 태생의 위스키들을 좀더 쉽게 풀어낸 듯한 느낌이다.

(하지만 Lost Distillery 홈페이지에서는 Lossit을 Robust(강려크한)라인으로 분류 해놓고 있다.)

위스키를 혀에 올려 놓으면,

버번캐스크 피니쉬 특유의 바닐라 느낌과 후추나 생강 같은것에서 느껴지는 약한 스파이시도 살짝 느껴진다.

아주 살짝.

나쁘지 않음.

피니쉬는 약간 베이컨 먹을때 느낄 수 있는 스모키가 코에서 스악 묻어나오면서 적당한 여운을 가져다 준다.

종합적으로 보면,

피트&스모크에 큰 불편함을 느끼지 않거나,

소프트하게 즐기고 싶은 사람이라면,

8.5만원에 사먹는게 전혀 아깝지 않을 정도의 깔끔한 피트 위스키,

그 정도 값어치 혹은 그 이상을 충분히 해주는 위스키이다.

근데 이제 실제 유통되는 시세가 얼마에 형성될지는 모르겠지만,

딱 그 가격 까지가 경쟁력 있을 것 같다.

10~11만원대에는 너무 괜찮은 위스키들이 많아지기 때문에....

어쨌든 좋은 경험이였음!

이제 이번달 말에 있는 2023 Seoul Bar & Spirit Show도 예매 해놨으니 그날도 괜찮은 술 발견 했으면 좋겠다.

2023 Seoul International Wine & Spirits Expo

Gather round! Drinkers' Paradise!

The 2023 Seoul International Wine & Spirits Expo, held June 22-24.
As a self-proclaimed lover of drink, this was an expo I felt I was obligated (?) to attend, so I pre-registered and quietly popped over.

(This year they didn't even take on-site registration in the first place... there are way too many drinkers in this country!)

There weren't many whisky booths, but I still have vivid, happy memories of spending a whopping four hours prowling from booth to booth like a thirsty hyena, getting poured

a whole lot.

While hunting down the few whisky booths there were and tasting away,

I of course also went chirping over like a sparrow that can't pass a mill to the BEX Spirits Korea booth, which had set up a pretty big space, and had some tastings.

(BEX Spirits Korea is a distributor that imports bourbons into Korea that any bourbon maniac would know, like Buffalo Trace and Stagg Jr.)

Personally I'm the type who doesn't get very excited about bourbon, so as soon as I saw the booth I skipped everything else and headed for the spot with the LOST DISTILLERY line, where you could

taste Scotch malt whisky.

Honestly, it was a product I'd never heard of, so my heart was pounding with curiosity.

According to the rep's explanation,

it was something something about distilleries from various regions of Scotland that had glorious pasts but no longer exist. Maybe the explanation was lacking, or maybe my comprehension was,

but at the time I understood it as if they had rebuilt the lost distilleries and released products from them.

Probably... it was because two women came up beside us partway through the explanation wanting a tasting, and that distorted my understanding and memory

of what was being said.

The moment the two of them arrived, they picked one product and said they'd like to try it,

and as soon as they both tasted it, all of a sudden,

perhaps deeply moved by the flavour and aroma, a '?' appeared on their foreheads, smile lines they didn't have before suddenly formed and dropped all the way down to their chins, and, unable to bring themselves

to actually shake their heads, their pupils did the head-shaking instead. Then they left a tasting note of 'Mmph!' and vanished into thin air.

(He did tell them it was a peated whisky...)

Anyway, we listened to the explanation more or less, and tasted all three products available that day.

JERICHO, from a former Highland distillery, with a light touch of sherry character;

DALARUAN, which made me wonder whether old Campbeltown whiskies were as smoky as Islay;

and LOSSIT, from a distillery that apparently once existed on Islay, whose origins I think I'd have guessed even without the explanation.
All three are NAS blended malt Scotch whiskies: to recreate the flavours and aromas of these now-vanished distilleries, they researched and studied surviving records, advice and memories,

then took spirit from several distilleries and blended it to reproduce the character of those distilleries as they were back then.

(...is what I found when I looked it up at home, because I'd completely forgotten everything they explained that day.)

Of the whiskies I tasted, the one that suited my taste best, and the one I bought a bottle of,

was the very whisky that sent those women who showed up mid-explanation into a pupil-quake of emotion:

Honestly, I didn't find enough peat in it to warrant all that head-shaking from those ladies.

A moderate, easy-going amount of peat and smoke,

very faint vanilla and fresh fruit,

no off-putting booze for an NAS,

something you could drink very comfortably,

and since there aren't many places selling it, I don't know the usual market price, and I'm not sure if it was a special expo price, but at ₩85,000

it was a whisky whose price I could fully accept.

Pour a glass,

and although it's an NAS and there's no cask info on the bottle or the box,
the bright amber colour in the glass tells you at a glance that it's been aged in bourbon casks.

(According to the official website, it's also non-chill filtered & natural colour.)

Bring the glass to your nose,

and a gentle malty aroma tells you it's a malt whisky, with smoke rather than peat spreading out richly. You also get a bit of fresh, sweet fruit.

But it's not the powerfull smoke that just blasts out like Lagavulin 16,

nor does it feel like a whole general hospital opening up inside my nose like Laphroaig or Ardbeg.

It feels like Islay-born whiskies explained in a more approachable way.

(But the Lost Distillery website does classify Lossit in its Robust (i.e. powerfull) line.)

Put the whisky on your tongue,

and you get the vanilla typical of bourbon cask maturation, plus a slight, gentle spice like you'd get from pepper or ginger.

Just a tiny bit.

Not bad.

The finish brings a whiff of that smokiness you get when eating bacon, gently seeping out through the nose, with a decent length.

Putting it all together,

if you're not bothered much by peat & smoke,

or you want to enjoy it on the softer side,

it's a clean peated whisky that's absolutely worth ₩85,000,

a whisky that more than earns that price, or even more.

That said, I don't know what the actual retail price will settle at,

but I think it's competitive right up to that price.

Because once you hit the ₩100,000-110,000 range, there are just too many really good whiskies....

Anyway, it was a great experience!

I've already booked tickets for the 2023 Seoul Bar & Spirit Show at the end of this month, so I hope I discover some good booze there too.

Can't wait.
